MIKE PATTEN OAM

Mike grew up in Hobart. He is married to Margot, and they have two sons and six grandchildren.

He was a teacher for 35 years in schools around the state, retiring in 2009.

After two years at the Boat School in Franklin, Mike joined the Howrah Men’s Shed in 2019 to continue his interest in woodworking. Since then, he has made many new friends and has become interested in doing more to support Men’s Health and Wellbeing.

He is currently Vice President at HMS.

Mike’s other interests include 44 years as a Scout Leader including 6 years as Chief Commissioner in Tasmania 2010-16 and 33 years in Rotary including being District Governor in Tasmania, 2023-24. He has held a variety of roles in the AEU, the Gifted and Talented Children’s Association and the Tasmanian Principals Association and is a life member of the Australian College of Education and the Bowen Road School Parents and Friends. He is a long-time member of the Hand Tool Preservation Association of Australia. He is also a regular contributor to Newspaper articles about Volunteering and the organisations he is involved in.

Mike was Clarence Citizen of the year in 2005 and received an OAM on Australia Day 2023
