A very successful Presidents Gathering was held in March 2019. Twenty-six representatives of existing Men’s Sheds and two guest representatives from a proposed new shed met together at ‘The Shed’ in Rocherlea (northern Tasmania) for discussion and a barbeque lunch.
Attendees shared information about how each of their Sheds operated; talking about their activities, structure, membership, and future direction. Discussions were held on topics such as the policies and procedures some sheds have in place to deal with day-to-day governance issues, health and safety, conflict resolution, gender inclusion and treasurer tasks. Also discussed was the desire for more co-operation between sheds in resource sharing; such as information sharing or the opportunity for each shed being able to utilise the machinery and/or expertise of other sheds.
Guest speaker, Lawrence from Tasmen, gave an informative and well received talk on the role that Tasmen undertakes in relation to Men’s Health. Tasmen conduct an annual gathering held over the three day March long weekend at which men are encouraged to free themselves from some of their ‘baggage’ and to become more contented and happier individuals. Some men find this life changing whilst for others it is simply enriching.
Happier men make for a happier community.
The 28 attendees represented nearly 400 members across 15 Sheds. All attendees acknowledged the benefit they gained from the discussions and expressed their desire for another Presidents Gathering in the future.
